Maths
In our school, we want all of our children to be fluent in Maths with the ability to reason and problem solve.
Our approach to teaching maths is CPA – children begin with Concrete resources, move onto Pictorial representations before tackling concepts in the Abstract. This approach is used for all year groups when moving onto a new unit. Some children will spend longer on the Concrete resources, some on Pictorial and some will quickly move onto the Abstract.
We use White Rose Maths as guidance when planning maths as it breaks down the learning objectives into carefully sequenced small steps. Teachers constantly assess the children within each lesson, and formally assess termly, using this assessment as a tool for planning further maths lessons.
We want all of our children to have the opportunity to become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, including through varied and frequent practice, to develop their recall of maths facts to support them taking on the challenge of more complex problems.
Alongside White Rose Maths, we use Tackling Tables and Tackling Add/Subtract to support children in rapidly and accurately recalling number facts. Children begin with Add/Subtract in Year 1 and Tables in Year 2, once multiplication and division have been taught.
Below are the long term plans for each phase group:
